- The seeds of Corypha umbraculifera are used to create beads called ‘Bodhi root’ in jewelry-making. This species, native to India and Sri Lanka, has leaves that are both flexible and supple when dry, making them ideal for carving intricate Buddhist Sutras. The leaves have been used for this purpose for centuries, with the most famous example being the ‘tale palm’ or ‘tad-patri’. In India, the plant is also known as ‘vegetable ivory’ due to its resemblance to the valuable material.
